With a Must Do May Do approach instead of rotating reading centers, students work on a list of activities they have to do. When they are finished with those activities, they work on activities they are free to choose from. When called to the guided reading table, all they do is stop working and get to the table.  No commotion, no wheel turning, no stopping everyone from what they were doing, etc. There is MORE time for instruction!  When their guided reading session is complete, students continue where they left off on their list.
