This Christmas project idea is originally from the ’90s, but has remained a 1st grade favorite every December! The homemade advent calendar was originally hand drawn by one of our 1st grade teacher’s mom decades ago, but luckily it’s still super easy to follow and cut out!

SO…the first thing I do at the end of November is to pull out my sample and announce it’s time to make our advent calendars activity! You can really feel the excitement, and my students are so excited to get started!

First, students cut out their Santa beard templates

Then, they start to assemble the advent calendar activity together

See what teachers like you are saying about their homemade advent calendars:

We do a calendar with art each month. This was perfect for December. My students couldn’t wait to take it home and start counting down the days until Christmas.

Once the template is cut out, pieces are glued, and students have written their names on their Santas, students have completed their Santa advent calendars! It really only takes about 30 minutes to complete all advent calendars.

As always with 1st grade, each Santa is unique and precious.❤️

Once completed, these adorable homemade Santa advent calendars are ready to be hung on the wall, so students can add a cotton ball for each day! Without a doubt, it’s always so hard to tell them they can’t take their advent calendars home quite yet…but as each day in December goes by and his Santa beard gets fuller and fuller that means the holiday break is right around the corner!
